The last day for open enrollment is on January 31, 2016.
Open enrollment for 2016 started on November 1st, but you still have plenty of time to enroll in a health insurance policy for the new year. However, if you want your coverage to start on January 1, 2016, you will need to enroll in a policy by December 15th.
Keep in mind that you still have time to enroll in a health insurance policy after December 15th, your coverage will just start later in the year. If you enroll in a health insurance policy between December 16th and January 15th, your coverage will start on February 1st. If you choose a policy between January 16th and January 31st, your coverage will start on March 1st.
Even though there were various extensions in the 2013 and 2014 open enrollment period, you should not count on any extensions this year. Most of the previous extensions were due to technical issues that did not allow people to enroll in a policy on time. While there is no way to guarantee that there will not be any extensions, enrolling in a plan before or on December 15th will help to make sure that your coverage is able to begin on the first of the year.
If you have a grandmothered health insurance plan that is ending on December 31st, you will be able to enroll in a health insurance policy by December 31st and still have your coverage start on January 1st. Keep in mind that you will have to show that your enrollment meets the requirements for a qualifying event. Even if you do meet the requirements, you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to find a policy since it will take time for your enrollment to be processed and mailed to you.
