Power outages can be stressful and frightening. Preparing for a power outage before one happens can help to make sure that you are not scrambling to find a source of light in the pitch black. Keep these power outage tips in mind to ensure that you are prepared for the next time the lights go out.
- Frozen water bottles – if the food in your fridge and freezer reach 40 degrees for more than 40 minutes, it is not safe to eat. Keep frozen water bottles, or even ice packs in your freezer at all times. If the power goes out, transfer a couple to your refrigerator to help keep your food cold for as long as possible.
- Non-perishable food – you should always have at least a week’s worth of non-perishable food at all times in your house. This can include canned and dried fruit, granola bars, peanut butter, jerky, and tuna packs. These foods can help to give you the nutrition that you need without having to cook.
- Light – you should have various ways to light up your house in case the power goes out. Keep flashlights next to every bed in your house, and a stock of long lasting candles in an easily accessible area to help light up your house.
- Generator – if you have a generator, it can be used to power your refrigerator or other necessary appliances until the power comes back on. Just make sure that you only run your generator outside in an open area, since generators produce carbon monoxide that can turn deadly in enclosed areas.
