Tips To Jump A Car
If you have ever gone to start your car only to have nothing happen, you know how important jumper cables can be. However, jumper cables can be useless if you do not know how to safely and properly use them. Keep these tips to jump a car in mind to ensure that you are never stuck on the side of the road for too long.
- Park the other vehicle close to your car, making sure that they are not touching, and then turn them both off.
- Connect the positive jumper cable, which is usually red, to the positive terminal on the dead battery. Make sure that the jumper cable does not touch any other piece of metal except the battery terminal.
- Connect the other end of the positive cable to the positive battery terminal on the other vehicle.
- Connect the negative cable, typically the black, to the negative terminal on the vehicle that is providing the jump.
- Connect the other negative end to an exposed piece of metal on the vehicle with the dead battery, such as a bolt or bracket.
- Start the working vehicle and run the engine a little above an idle. Then start the dead vehicle. If it does not start, you may have a bad connection somewhere. Keep both vehicles running for about 20 minutes to ensure that the battery is charged.
- Remove the cables, starting with the negative connection on the previously dead vehicle, and then moving to the positive connections.
