Alhambra will be a Host Town for the Special Olympics
The Special Olympics are coming to Alhambra! The city was chosen as one of the host cities for the games and will play a special role in welcoming the delegations of the Games to Southern California. The Games are set to begin on July 25th and continue until August 2nd, but Alhambra’s host city duties to welcome participants will happen from July 21st through the 24th.
The Special Olympics will be the largest humanitarian and sports event in the world in 2015, bringing 3,000 coaches, 7,000 athletes, 30,000 volunteers, and 500,000 spectators to the Southern California area. The Games will also be the sports and humanitarian event in the area since the 1984 Olympic games.
As a host town, Alhambra will serve as the “Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley” alongside Monterey Park. Alhambra will be an “international gateway” for around 100 guest athletes, families, and coaches from a couple other delegations. Along with housing the athletes, coaches, and families, host towns will provide them with meals, training locations, and transportations. Host towns are also responsible for showing their guests a little bit of American culture through the local community by showing off the local landscapes and environment, local music, artistic expressions, and local customs.
Volunteers are the backbone of the Special Olympics since they provide the hospitality needed for all international delegates, and there is always a need for more volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering with the Host Town program for the 2015 Special Olympics, contact the City staff at 625-570-5011 or the Chamber staff at 626-282-8481.
