The last day to purchase health insurance on the open exchange is fast approaching. Individuals and families that are trying to meet the guidelines set forth in the Affordable Care Act – or Obamacare as it is referred to – will need to sign up and purchase health insurance by March 31, 2014.

All insurance companies are required to have an open enrollment period. This open enrollment period allows anyone to apply for one of the many coverage options that are available. The open enrollment period for all insurance companies ends on March 31, 2014.

After March 31, 2014 individuals will be unable to purchase health insurance on the open market until the 2015 enrollment period starts. This typically starts in the fall.

People who do not purchase health insurance for themselves and their families face a potential penalty imposed by the federal government. The penalty for not purchasing health insurance for 2014 is $95 per individual over the age of 18 and $47.50 for children under 18. The maximum penalty will be $285 per household or 1% of the household income – whichever is greater.
